ATLANTA, Ga. (Apr. 14, 2017) – Millsaps College rolled through doubles play without a loss and went on to defeat Oglethorpe University, 8-1, in a Southern Athletic Association men's tennis match. It was the first win for the Majors against the Stormy Petrels since the 2006-07 season.
Ranked No. 11 in the latest regional rankings, Millsaps (21-5, 5-1 SAA) had no problem in doubles play as it rolled to an early 3-0 lead. The Majors picked up 8-2 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3, with the No. 1 the team of junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas), currently ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 5 in the region, adding an 8-3 decision to the sweep.
Centurion took the first point in singles play for Millsaps with a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the No. 2 match. Oglethorpe (7-11, 3-3 SAA), No. 19 in the regional rankings, picked up its point in the No. 6 match when sophomore
Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) had to retire.
At No. 1 junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) then clinched the victory for Millsaps, taking a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ryhs Richardson. The Majors went on to win two more matches in straight sets, with Plummer winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) taking a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3.
At No. 5 junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) dropped his first set, but came back to win a 5-7, 6-0, 10-7 decision to close out the scoring.
Millsaps will finish its regular season tomorrow at Berry College in a 9:00 a.m. Eastern matchup with the Vikings.
