Rome, Ga. (Apr. 15) – Millsaps closed out its regular season in men's tennis this afternoon on a high note, scoring an 8-1 victory over Berry College in a Southern Athletic Association match. Sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) picked up a pair of wins for the Majors.
Millsaps (22-5, 6-1 SAA) started the match with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then an 8-4 decision at No. 1 to take an early 2-0 lead. The Majors No. 3 team of sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) and freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) then polished off the sweep with their 8-2 win.
Moving to singles Millsaps wrapped things up quickly with a pair of victories that put them over top for the match win. Friedler, playing at No. 3, started the Majors off on a strong note with a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Plummer then picked up the deciding fifth point of the day at No. 4 where he won a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Millsaps went on to win all but the No. 6 match to complete the win. At No. 1 junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) scored a 6-2, 6-3 win, with junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) holding off a comeback attempt by his opponent at No. 2 in a 6-1, 7-6 (9) decision. Also picking up a singles win for the Majors was junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) at No. 5 where he took a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 10-7 win.
Millsaps will spend the next week preparing for the SAA Championships that will take place in Little Rock, Arkansas from April 21-23.
