CONWAY, Ark. (Apr. 2, 2017) – It was a solid ending to a two-match Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road swing for the Millsaps College men's tennis team as the Majors blanked Hendrix College, 9-0, today. Ranked No. 14 in the latest regional rankings, Millsaps stayed undefeated and tied with Sewanee atop the SAA standings.
It was a dominant performance by Millsaps (19-4, 3-0 SAA), with the Majors starting doubles play with a pair of 8-1 wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The closest that Hendrix (3-9, 0-3 SAA) would come in the opening matches was at No. 2 where the Majors' duo of sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) and freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) scored an 8-3 win over Karthik Garimella and Daniel Habenicht.
Moving to singles play Millsaps continued its strong play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Three Majors; sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) at No. 3, junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) at No. 4 and freshman
Brandon Beck (Metairie, La.) at No. 6, dropped just one game in their victories. In two other matches Millsaps gave up just two games as Friedler and sophomore
Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) both won 6-1, 6-1, at Nos. 2 and 5 respectively.
At No. 1 junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Garimella.
Millsaps will return home for more SAA action next weekend, with Majors starting their home stand with a match on Saturday, April 8 at Noon against Centre College.
