MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Apr. 1, 2017) – For a second straight time on the road the Millsaps College men's tennis team faced a regionally ranked opponent in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play, and for the second straight time the Majors came up with a victory. Ranked No. 14 in the region, Millsaps scored a 7-2 win over No. 12 ranked Rhodes College.
Millsaps (18-4, 2-0 SAA) took control of the match early, sweeping the three doubles matches. Ranked No. 5 in the region, junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) started the sweep with an 8-1 decision over the No. 14 team in the region, Albert Vacheron and Daniel Oliver. After an 8-4 win at No. 2, Millsaps secured the sweep when its No. 3 team of sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) and freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) held off their opponents from Rhodes (12-4, 1-1 SAA), 8-6.
Three of the singles matches were decided in straight sets, with junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) picking up one of those with his 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Plummer taking a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win at No. 4.
Millsaps also took two of the three matches that went to three sets to ice the victory. Friedler bounced back from a close first set loss at No. 3 to secure a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4 win over Andrew Morton. Playing at No. 5, junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) also came back from a close first set loss, taking a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-4 victory against Sean Hogan.
Millsaps will move on tomorrow for anther SAA road match, traveling to Hendrix College for a 9:00 a.m. matchup.
