NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Apr. 21, 2017) – Millsaps College shook off a loss in doubles play and walked away with a 5-1 win over Centre College in a quarterfinal match of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Tennis Tournament. The No. 2 seed in the tournament, the Majors will now advance to a semifinal match tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. against No. 3 seed Rhodes College.
Millsaps (23-5) opened play with a pair of points in the doubles portion of the match. The Majors' No. 2 team of junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) and freshman
Brandon Beck (Metairie, La.) won their match 8-2, with the No. 3 team of freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) and sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) taking an 8-3 decision. The tournament's No. 7 seed, Centre (6-12) scored an upset in the No. 1 match where the Colonels defeated the Majors by an 8-5 score.
One point was all that Millsaps would allow in the match. In singles play the Majors wrapped things up with wins in each of the top three flights to reach the five points needed to move on in the tournament. At No. 3, Friedler defeated his opponent, 6-1, 6-1, to put another point on the Millsaps side of the scoreboard before Marti-Vertiz made it 4-1 in favor of Millsaps with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 match against Trey Akmon. Junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) then wrapped things up for the Majors in his No. 2 match where he took a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
