NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Apr. 22, 2017) – After falling behind in doubles play, the Millsaps men's tennis team roared back in singles, winning all four matches finished to score a 5-2 victory over Rhodes College in a semifinal match of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Tennis Tournament. The Majors will now go on to meet Sewanee tomorrow for the conference title.
Rhodes (17-6), seeded No. 3 in the tournament, got off to a quick start with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles and an 8-2 decision in the No. 2 contest. At No. 1 the Millsaps tandem of junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) came through for the Majors with an 8-5 win over Albert Vacheron and Daniel Oliver to make it a one-point match going to singles play.
Millsaps (24-5), ranked #11 in the region and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, did not allow another point the rest of the match, picking up the four wins it needed to advance with victories in the top four flights. At No. 3 sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) scored an impressive win with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Andrew Morton. In the No. 1 match junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) won his eighth straight with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vacheron.
At No. 4 Plummer also scored a straight sets win, taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Phil Lauture. Playing at No. 2, Centurion dropped his first set, but came back to win a tie-breaker in the second set that ended up propelling him to a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win that moved the Majors on to the finals.
Millsaps and Sewanee, ranked No. 18 in the nation, will square off tomorrow for the SAA title starting at 9:00 a.m. at Burns Park in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
