NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Apr. 23, 2017) – No. 1 seed Sewanee took two of the three in doubles to open play and went on to defeat No. 2 seed Millsaps College, 5-1, in the championship match of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Tennis Tournament. Sophomores
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) and
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) were named to the SAA All-Tournament team for the Majors.
Nationally ranked at No. 18, Sewanne (21-3) picked up one point in doubles when the Tigers scored an 8-2 win at No. 2. Millsaps (24-6) saw its No. 3 team of Friedler and freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) pick up a point for the Majors with an 8-4 victory in their contest.
Which team was going to take the lead going into singles came down to the No.1 match between the team of Pummer and junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) for Millsaps and Jack Gray/Alejandro Becker for Sewanee. It became a tight competition between the Majors' No. 5 regionally ranked team and the Tigers team that is No. 11 in the region. The contest went to a tie breaker before Sewanee prevailed in a close, 9-8 (6), decision.
In singles play Millsaps could not break through for a win, as Sewanee took the first three matches decided to win the championship. The Tigers won at Nos. 1, 5, and 6 in straight sets to secure the victory. Centurion was up one set in his No. 2 match for the Majors when the match ended.
