JACKSON, Miss. (Apr. 8, 2017) - Millsaps College splits their doubleheader against Hendrix College in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) softball game. The Majors took the first game 2-1 and The Warriors won the second game 4-1.
Senior
Kayla Davidson (Slaughter, La.) got the start on the mound for the Majors in game one. Millsaps got on the board early when
senior Kat Romero (Lafayette, La.) ran in off a single to left field by senior
Hannah Doggett (Cypress, Texas)
in the first inning. The Warriors quickly responded with a home run by Nikki Sanders in the second inning to tie the game up.
The scored remained gridlocked at 1-1 until the fifth inning when senior
Rayne Gravat (Franklin, Tenn.) drove a batter in to give Millsaps a 2-1 lead. The Majors shut Hendrix out the next two innings to take the victory in the front end of the Saturday doubleheader. Davidson improved her pitching record to 13-3 as she struck out another seven batters.
In the second game, Millsaps got off to a rough start, giving up a run in the first inning off a double by Karli Sewell. The Warriors scored another run in the second inning on a Victoria Hughes single to right field. The Majors responded with a run of their own at the bottom of the second when senior
Hannah Dee Smith (Decatur, Miss.) batted in senior
Kaitlyn Casias (Cypress, Texas) to only trail 2-1.
After relenting another score in the third inning, the Majors made a pitching change, swapping out junior
Cassidy DeNoon (Winona, Miss.)
for junior
Blair Little. From there, Millsaps was able to mostly shut out the Warriors until the top of the seventh inning when Sydney Ozersky slid in for a score and got a controversial safe call from the umpire. In the bottom of the seventh, a double from Gravat gave Millsaps life but the Majors were ultimately unable to complete a comeback. Millsaps fell in the second end of their doubleheader to Hendrix, 4-1.
