Millsaps Drops 6-3 Decision to #18 Sewanee

JACKSON, Miss. (Apr. 9, 2017) – Sewanee won all three doubles matches and then used the strong start to take a 6-3 win over Millsaps College in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) men's tennis match. Junior Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) scored an upset win at No. 1 singles to highlight the day for the Majors.

Sewanee (16-2, 5-0 SAA), ranked No. 18 in the nation, started strong with a sweep in doubles. The Tigers won 8-4 at No. 1 before going to take the Nos. 2 and 3 matches by 8-5 scores to go up 3-0 in the contest.

In singles play Sewanee won the first three matches that were decided to give the Tigers enough points to earn the team victory.

Millsaps (20-5, 4-1 SAA) did not fold and came back with victories in the final three singles contests. Sophomore Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) started the streak at No. 6 where he came back from a first set loss to take a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win. In another three-set match, sophomore Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) took a hard-fought first set and then held off a comeback attempt by Jordan Brewer to score a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 win. Playing against an opponent ranked No. 5 in the region, Marti-Vertiz came up short in his first set but then stormed back to close out the day on a good note for Millsaps by taking a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision against Avery Schober.

Millsaps has one weekend left of regular season SAA play and will start that on Friday when the Majors will play at Oglethorpe University.
