JACKSON, Miss. – MIlsaps came up one goal short in a tightly contested match to non-conference foe East Texas Baptist Tuesday night. The final score was 3-2 and the Majors have now lost three in a row.
Despite MIllsaps outshooting the Tigers 10-5 and 5-2 on goal in the first half, East Texas Baptist was able to score two goals in the half. Millsaps had their chances early with three shots in the first eight minutes of play.
The Tigers scored their first goal in the ninth minute and their second in the 24th to take the 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Millsaps came out of the locker rooms ready to make a comeback. Just two minutes into the second half,
Gabriel Ryce (Jonesboro, Ga.) got a pass from
Alex Bourland (Charleston, S.C.) and sent it into the back of the net to cut the Tigers lead in half.
ETBU had an answer, they scored in the 73rd minute to go ahead 3-1.
It was in the 87th minute when Millsaps showed life again.
Dimitri Staursky (Birmingham, Ala.) scored his fourth goal of the season to make it a one-goal game. Millsaps had opportunities to tie the match in the final minutes with a corner and a free kick but were unable to capitalize.
"We have to continue to learn to reward ourselves better". Said head coach
Steve Voltz, "We have a tough road trip coming up, and I know we will be ready".
With the loss Millsaps drops to 4-4-1 on the season. The Majors play their next match on Friday against SAA opponent Hendrix on the road, that game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
