JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps traveled across the street to Belhaven Monday night for its first road match of the 2017 season and finished in a scoreless tie. Sophomore
Gabriel Ryce (Jonesboro, Ga.) finished with two shots on goal, while freshman
Johannes Tonneson (Bad Oldesloe, Germany) had one shot on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alfie Miller (London, England) picked up his second shutout in as many games on the season.
Both squads played evenly in the first half, the teams were tied with two shots and one corner each. Senior
Alex Bourland (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore
Tore Schütt (Hamburg, Germany) had scoring chances, but were unable to connect.
Millsaps controlled the pace for much of the second half, out-shooting Belhaven six to three. The Majors first scoring opportunity came in the 53rd minute when sophomore
Brett Judd's (Monroe, La.) shot hit the post. Their second chance came in the 82nd minute when Schütt set up Ryce with a one-on-one shot that was saved.
The Majors and Blazers each had just one shot on goal in the two overtime periods. With neither team able to score, the match finished in a tie.
Head coach
Steve Voltz commented on the game, "I'm not happy with the tie because I think we worked hard enough and created an opportunity to put them away and get a win. But you have to give them credit, they defended well and I'm really impressed with our guys defensively. That's two shutouts plus overtime in a row, it's a good way to start the season. We just have to become more efficient in front of the goal, that's something that sets a championship team apart, really proud of the team effort."
With the tie, the Majors record is now 1-0-1. Millsaps continues its season on Friday, September 8th at Harper Davis Field against LSU-Shreveport, game time is a 5:00 p.m.
