Millsaps Drops Close Match to Pilots

JACKSON, Miss. – MIllsaps was unable to put the ball in the back of the net for the second straight match. This time the Majors fell 1-0 to LSU-Shreveport in a game that was tightly contested throughout. Junior Colton Townsell (Conway, Ark) made his first start of the season in goal and finished with four saves. Senior Alex Bourland (Charleston, S.C.) had the only shot on goal for Millsaps.

Bourland started things off for both sides in the 18th minute, he put a shot on goal that was saved by Pilots goalkeeper Joran Van Houdt. Milllsaps would have one more shot in the first half.

LSU-Shreveport tallied four first half shots. Townsell kept the game scoreless in the 44th minute with a save to bring the match into halftime.

The tie-breaking goal for the Pilots came in the 76th minute. Carlos Martinez put it past Townsell on a free kick to give LSU-Shreveport the lead and the win.

Millsaps had their opportunities, the Majors had four corner kicks compared to the Pilots zero.

Head coach Steve Voltz said, "In our three games, the guys have brought fantastic effort, we believe in our team concept. It took an extremely well struck free kick for us to finally give up a goal. We need to continue to work on that killer instinct up front and take advantage of the chances that we have. It was good to see Colton do well, we were organized defensively. I know we will come out tomorrow and do well, I'm pleased with the way we played but the result hurts."

With the loss, Millsaps falls to 1-1-1 on the season, they are back in action on Saturday to take on Covenant at Harper Davis Field for a 7:00 pm start.
