JACKSON, Miss. – It had been over two games since the Millsaps Majors last scored a goal on the season. That streak ended in the 49th minute against Covenant when
Gabriel Ryce (Jonesboro, Ga.) sent one past the keeper and into the back of the net to give the Majors a 1-0 win.
Millsaps was over ten shots for the second time this season and finished with eight on goal. Senior
Alex Bourland (Charleston, S.C.) finished with five shots and three on goal while sophomore
Tore Schüt (Hamburg, Germany) had two shots on goal.
The first half was played at a slow pace from both sides. Millsaps outshot Covenant 6-1 but were unable to get anything going offensively.
In the second half Millsaps found their energy. Just four minutes into the second,
Gabriel Ryce scored his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Jeff Owens (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). That was the deciding factor and it pushed Millsaps to the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alfie Miller (London, England), who did not play last game, picked up his third shutout in three games on the season. He tallied two saves in the match.
Head coach
Steve Voltz said of his teams play, "I'm really pleased for the guys to come out with a win after a tough loss yesterday and bring the energy. Covenant is a very good team and they came out very organized. We needed
Alfie Miller to come up big a couple times early to keep the game scoreless. Then we found our rhythm and once we had the goal by Gabe, we took control of the game and had a couple more good looks. I'm happy for the guys because we needed that one, and now we get a day to recover and get ready for our first true road test at Louisiana College."
Millsaps improves to 2-1-1 on the season. They head on the road for their next game at Louisiana College on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
