JACKSON, Miss. -- It was homecoming weekend on the campus of Millsaps College, and the Majors football team welcomed the 'Roos of Austin College to Harper Davis Field for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup.
The Majors found themselves down 20-3 at halftime, and despite outscoring Austin in the 4th quarter, suffered their second loss of the season by a 34-23 score.
How It Happened
On their third possession of the game, Austin College scored first on a 17-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 6:31 left in the 1st quarter.
After the ensuing Millsaps drive stalled in Austin territory,
Andrew Byrd drilled a 41-yard field to make it a 7-3 game with 2:17 remaining in the quarter.
Unfortunately, the 'Roos outscored the Majors by a 13-0 mark in the 2nd quarter to take a 20-3 lead to the halftime locker room.
To start the 2nd half, Millsaps took the opening kickoff, and marched down the field in 14 plays for a score.
Fritz Walker III capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown, and the PAT from
Hunter Sellen brought the Majors two within two scores at 20-10.
Chance Clowers was 4-8 passing on the drive, including a pair of connections with
John Bourgeois for a combined 19 yards.
The Millsaps defense forced an Austin punt on their next possession to get the ball back for the offense, but unfortunately the next drive for the Majors was killed by an offensive pass interference penalty. When the 'Roos got the ball back they scored in just six plays to push their lead out to 27-10.
Early on in the 4th quarter, after Austin fumbled the snap on a punt attempt, the Majors took over deep inside 'Roos territory. Just three plays later Clowers found the end zone on the ground from two yards out, and the PAT made it 27-17.
With the defense desperately needing a stop, Austin went on a 13 play, 75-yard drive that ate up 7:26, and ended with a touchdown. With just 2:26 left in the game Millsaps trailed 34-17.
The offense was able to drive down and score in just 59 seconds.
Ty Durham, who was honored pregame as this year's Juan Joseph Memorial Award recipient, ran for a 2-yard score, but the PAT attempt was no good, and the Majors found themselves down 34-23 with less than a minute left.
On the ensuing kickoff, Austin College recovered the Millsaps onside attempt, and took a knee on the final two-plays of the game to secure their win.
Clowers finished 20-34 for 219 yards through the air.
Andrew Warren led the Majors rushing attack with 84 yards on 15 attempts. Walker added 66 yards and the one TD. Bourgeois hauled in a game-high 9 receptions for 90 yards.
Defensively,
Dylan Higgins and
Chandler Coleman each had 7 tackles to lead the team. Coleman and
Liam Vincifora both had a sack on the afternoon for the Majors.
