MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College football team traveled to Georgia to take on No. 12 Berry College in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) battle.
The Majors led the majority of the contest, and it took a late defensive touchdown plus a two-point conversion to send the game into overtime.
Unfortunately in the second overtime Berry's offense scored, and their defense came up with the critical stop on downs to allow the Vikings to escape with a 28-21 win.
How It Happened
Berry got on the scoreboard first with a 47-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead late in the 1st quarter.
The Millsaps offense responded midway through the 2nd with a 12 play, 60 yard drive that culminated with
Chance Clowers finding
Ty Durham for a 10-yard touchdown. The PAT attempt from
Andrew Byrd was good, and the Majors led 7-3 with 8:07 left until halftime.
Late in the 2nd quarter the Vikings intercepted a pass which allowed them to take over inside Millsaps territory. 8 plays later they kicked a 32-yard field goal to make it 7-6 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Millsaps. In their second drive the Majors marched 57 yards in just five plays for their second touchdown of the game. On the drive Clowers connected with
Austin Russell for a pair of huge gains through the air. The drive was capped off by a 1-yard TD run by
Tyler Muse.
As the game moved into the 4th quater the Majors held on to a 14-6 lead. After the defense forced Berry into a turnover on downs, the offense took over with less than 7 minutes remaining and looking to run some valuable time off of the clock. Unfortunately the Vikings got the Majors in a third-and-long situation. On the third down play Clowers was forced to run and fumbled on the play. Berry recoverd and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown. The Vikings were successful on their two-point conversion to tie the game up at 14-14.
The teams traded possessions a couple of times, but it was Berry who found themselves with the ball inside Millsaps territory with less than two minutes to play in the game. The Vikings got the ball down to the Majors 18-yard line but the drive stalled and the game moved into overtime.
In the first overtime it took Millsaps just two plays before Clowers found Russell for an 18-yard touchdown. Byrd's PAT was good to give the Majors the 21-14 lead.
Unfortunately, Berry answered back with a TD and extra point to forced a second overtime.
In the second OT the Vikings possessed the ball first. They scored in just three plays to move ahead 28-21.
Millsaps took over needing a touchdown and extra point to force a third overtime period. The Majors moved the ball down inside the Berry 10-yard line, but could not convert for the score and the Vikings escaped with the 28-21 win.
Clowers finished 15-40 for 157 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Andrew Warren and
Fritz Walker III combined for 122 yards on the ground, and Russell led the receivers with 87 yards on 5 receptions and the one touchdown.
The Majors defense held strong all afternoon long, forcing seven Viking punts and causing Berry to turn the ball over on downs twice. They did not allow a Berry offensive touchdown in regulation.
Steele Liles led the team with 9 total tackles.
Reid Evans was one of several players who made 7 tackles. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Chandler Coleman and
DJ Lamkin also had sacks for the Majors.
On special teams Byrd averaged 40.4 yards per kick on 8 punts. He had a long of 53 yards and 3 down inside the 20-yard line.
