DANVILLE, Ky. -- On Saturday the Millsaps College football team hit the road for the final time in 2018. The Majors traveled to Kentucky for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup with the Colonels of Centre College.
Millsaps trailed 14-6 at halftime, but Colonel offense found their groove in the second half. Centre scored five touchdowns in the final thirty minutes, including 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter, to come away with the 49-13 win.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first quarter, it was Centre who got on the scoreboard first early on in the 2nd. With 14:13 left in the 2nd quarter, the Colonels took a 7-0 lead on 12-yard rushing touchdown.
Millsaps responded on the very next drive. After a nice kick return by
Edward Dougherty, the Majors took over possession near midfield. 11 plays later the drive stalled on a sack, but
Hunter Sellen was able to drill a 42-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.
On the next Colonel drive
Dylan Higgins intercepted a pass and returned out to the Millsaps 49-yard line.
The ensuing drive saw the Majors march 43 yards in 10 plays, but again the drive stalled and Sellen connected on a 25-yard field goal to make the score 7-6.
Unfortunately on their last possession of the second quarter Centre needed just five plays to go 84 yards for another touchdown. That score put the Colonels up 14-6 as the teams headed to halftime.
Centre scored midway through the third quarter to go up 21-6, but again the Majors had the answer.
This time it was
Amryn Jeffrey who led Millsaps 75 yards in 10 plays for what would prove to be their only touchdown of the game. The drive was capped off by 3-yard run by
Fritz Walker III for his fifth touchdown of the season.
Unfortunately it was all Centre from that point. The Colonels scored one more time in the 3rd and then found the endzone three times in the 4th quarter to come away with the 49-13 win.
For the Millsaps offense Walker and
Andrew Warren each saw 15 carries on the ground. Warren led the way with 72 yards, but it was Walker who found the endzone for the Majors.
Chance Clowers finished 19-35 for 165 yards passing.
Ty Durham was the team's leading receiver with 5 catches for 73 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Hooch Jeansonne led the team with 6 total tackles.
Liam Vincifora and
Ian O'Brien each had a sack for Millsaps, and in the secondary Higgins and
Malcolm Ben both had interceptions.
What's Next?
After back-to-back weekends on the road, Millsaps returns to Harper Davis Field next week. The Majors will host Birmingham-Southern in a SAA contest that is scheduled to kickoff at 1:00pm.
