JACKSON, Miss. -- After playing a pair of road games the past two weeks, the Millsaps College Majors returned home on Saturday for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup with the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers.
The Panthers got out to a 24-0 lead at halftime, and held off the Majors comeback attempt to pick up the 34-17 win.
How It Happened
The Panthers struck first on a 52-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead early on in the 1st quarter.
The next Millsaps drive started well with a 19-yard rush from
Andrew Warren, but unfortunately it stalled and BSC got the ball back on downs. On that drive the Panthers marched 80 yards in just 7 plays to take a 10-0 lead on the first touchdown of the game.
The Majors offense moved the ball with success in the 2nd quarter, but unfortunately was plagued by turnovers. The Panthers scored a pair of 2nd quarter TDs to take a 24-0 lead to the halftime locker room.
Birmingham-Southern started the second-half with possession, and the Millsaps defense stood tall to force a three-and-out. On their first offensive possession of the second-half the Majors went 67 yards in 7 plays to pick up their first points of the game, a 27-yard field goal from
Andrew Byrd.
Unfortunately, after the teams traded a pair of possessions, BSC answered with a a field goal of their own to move ahead 27-3.
Late in the third-quarter freshman QB
Amryn Jeffrey led the Majors on an 8 play, 60-yard scoring drive that was capped off by an 8-yard pass to
Austin Russell for the first Millsaps TD of the game. Jeffrey connected with four different receivers on the drive in an effort to jumpstart the Majors' offense.
As the game moved into the 4th quarter, BSC put up another touchdown that gave them a 34-10 lead with less than 9 minutes to play. That score unfortunately ended the comeback hopes for Millsaps.
The Majors did end on a high-note as Jeffrey again led the offense down the field, and capped off a 7 play drive with a 5-yard rushing score.
Unfortunately, Millsaps just ran out of time in this one as BSC came away with the 34-17 win.
Offensively, Jeffrey finished as the leading passer with 171 yards and 1 touchdown. Warren led the team on the ground with 50 rushing yards on 13 attempts, and
Zach Henley led all receivers with 94 yards on 4 receptions.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Hooch Jeansonne led the way with 9 total tackles.
Mickale Massey had a team-high 2 tackles-for-loss while
Chandler Coleman,
Vance Laws and
Liam Vincifora all had sacks for the Majors.
