MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Sometimes all it takes is one.
Soccer, like most sports, is played completely different depending on whether you're ahead or behind. Millsaps, which dropped a 3-0 decision to Rhodes when the two teams met in the regular season, was able to play ahead this time and, as a result, the outcome was completely different.
Luca Kistner took a pass from
Brett Judd in the 25
th minute and put it past the Lynx goalkeeper, for a 1-0 lead. The Millsaps defense, able to play with a lead, took care of the rest as the 7
th seeded Majors eliminated the 2
nd seeded Lynx, 1-0, in Memphis.
The Majors came into Saturday's match having been shutout in their last 5, but the past doesn't matter when it comes to the postseason. The Majors also welcomed back starting goalkeeper,
Alfie Miller, who had been sidelined with an injury since the midway point of the season.
In the 25
th minute, after a Rhodes corner kick, Kistner took the pass from Judd and buried it for his 4
th goal of the season. The assist was Judd's first.
After that goal, the Major defense, consisting of Miller,
Christian Zamiela,
Throstur Saemundsson,
Nick Robin Kälin and
Bruno Marques, kept the Lynx offense at bay. While Rhodes outshot Millsaps, 10-2, Miller was on his game, saving all 10 and giving the Majors a chance to pull the upset.
The Majors finished with just 2 shots on goal, with
Mikel Gomez having the other.
Words From the Coach
"Today was a great collective effort," head coach
Steve Voltz said. "The guys have bought into changes we made.
Alfie Miller being back was a boost for the guys. We took advantage of the opportunity we were given and I'm really proud of the guys to show what we're capable of."
