JACKSON, Miss.—In any sport, it's hard to play from behind.
That's exactly what the Millsaps men's soccer team had to do against Oglethorpe Friday night at Harper Davis Field. The Stormy Petrels scored 3 goals in the first three and a half minutes and held the Majors to just one goal as Millsaps fell 3-1 in the next to last home match of the season.
Oglethorpe got the scoring started early as Devon Patterson's pass found a jumping Topher Marshall, who headed it past diving goalkeeper
Tyler Andrews to put OU ahead 1-0. Two more goals from Oglethorpe, both by Affonso Temporal, gave Oglethorpe plenty of breathing room.
The Millsaps defense tightened up to finish out the first half, but the offense wasn't able to get anything going as the Major trailed 3-0 going into halftime.
The Majors came out blazing in the second half and were able to score just 8 minutes in.
Ruben Hamann, who was making just his second start of the season after returning from injury, drilled a corner kick to defenseman
Christian Zamiela, who headed it past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. That brought the Majors within 2, at 3-1.
Millsaps' best chance came less than a minute later when
Luca Kistner lasered a shot on goal from 15 yards out, but the OU goalkeeper made a diving save to preserve the two-goal lead. While the Major defense kept the Stormy Petrels off the board in the second half, the Millsaps offense couldn't strike again, ultimately falling 3-1, to move to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the SAA.
The Majors only had 4 shots on goal, with
Jeff Bruni and
Bruno Marques adding one each. Defensively, Andrews had 7 saves.
What the Coach Said
"We played a really good Oglethorpe team tonight," Millsaps head coach
Steve Voltz said. "When you're playing a team like that, you can't get down early like we did. I'm proud of our guys for the way they played after the first goals, but we just dug ourselves too deep a hole. We have to get after it in the next match against Berry and put a whole one together. I hope everyone comes out to support the final home match for our seniors."
What's Next?
The Majors will be back in action Sunday as Berry College travels to Harper Davis Field. It's the last regular season home match for Millsaps, so the team will be celebrating its seniors prior to the start. The match starts at 2:30 pm.
