Softball Splits Road Doubleheader at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team went on their first road trip to the Mississippi University for Women Sunday afternoon and split the doubleheader using the run-rule in a 12-1 win and then falling 7-2 in game two. Millsaps is now 3-1 on the young season, while MUW starts its year at 1-1.

Game 1:
In her second start this season, grad student Kayla Davidson did not allow any runs to come across in her four innings of work for the Majors. She gave up just four hits, walked two batters and came away with three strikeouts.

Offense was the story of this game for Millsaps and it came in bunches. After neither team was able to bring any across in the first two innings, the Majors broke the game open with an eight run third. With two outs, MIllsaps loaded the bases and scored two runs on a walk and a hit by pitch and three more scored on errors. Davidson finished off the inning with a bases clearing single to make it 8-0 at the end of three.

Three more runs came around in the fourth. Millsaps loaded the bases with nobody out before Hailey Pearson hit a two-RBI single and later scored from third on a passed ball to bring the lead to 11-0.

Davidson scored the final run of the game for the Majors in the fifth. She got on base with a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a single by Lindsey Osbon and scored when Jordan Lipari drove her in.

The only run of the game for MUW was unearned in the bottom of the fifth when Shauna Blady was in the circle, but Blady quickly finished the inning to secure the game one win for the Majors.

Game 2:
Millsaps suffered its first loss of the season, falling 7-2 in game two. Freshman Karley Williams got the start and took the loss going 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, four earned on five hits and struck out two batters.

Both runs for the Majors came in the second inning when Kendall Carder hit a bases loaded single to drive in Jordan Lipari from third and MK Bozeman's sacrifice fly brought in Leslie Norris to give Millsaps a 2-0 lead at the end of two.

MUW then scored six runs in the third and one more in the sixth as the Majors were unable to get their bats going for the rest of the game.

Millsaps is off until Saturday when they travel to Demorest, Ga. to face Greensboro in the Piedmont Classic starting at 8:00am. The Majors will play four games that weekend.
