Softball Takes Down Piedmont; Walks Off Over Averett

DEMOREST, Ga.. – Millsaps came away with two victories over USA South conference opponents Friday morning at the Piedmont Classic. The Majors first defeated the Hosts 4-2, they then earned a 2-1 walk-off victory over Averett in the second game of the day. Millsaps improves to 5-1 on the season.

Game 1 v. Piedmont:
In game one, Millsaps used a solid pitching performance and timely hitting to come away with a 4-2 win. Kayla Davidson got the start in the circle and went five innings, giving up five hits, two unearned runs and struck out one batter. Blair Little threw the final two innings allowing just two hits and no runs.

MK Bozeman got it started in the first inning with a single up the middle and Little laid down a sac-bunt to move her to second. Davidson followed with a double to left field that scored Bozeman to give the Majors their first run of the game. Later in the inning, Jordan Lipari singled in Davidson to make it 2-0 Millsaps at the end of the first inning.

Millsaps kept Piedmont off the scoreboard until the Lions brought two runs across in the third inning. With runners on first and second with two outs, an error allowed both runners to score, tying the game at two heading into the fourth.

The Majors took the lead for good in the fourth. Hailey Pearson drove in Lipari from second with a base hit and advanced to second on the throw, then Kendall Carder singled in Pearson to give the Majors a 4-2 lead.

Piedmont put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but Little was able to get out of both jams with help from the defense and Millsaps hung on for the victory.

Game 2 v. Averett:
Hailey Pearson came through with some late game heroics in the Majors 2-1 victory over Averett in game two.

Kayla Davidson was back in the circle and pitched a complete game, giving up just one earned run on three hits and struck out eight batters over seven innings.

Davidson allowed just one hit over the first five innings. Averett scored the first run of the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to make it 1-0 Cougars.

Millsaps got the run back when Kendall Carder singled, stole second and advanced to third. Davidson then singled to score Carder and tie the game at one heading into the seventh.

After the Majors quickly got out of the top half, things fell in place in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Lipari led off the inning with a double and later advanced to third, setting things up for Pearson who singled in the run to complete the walk-off win.

Millsaps returns home for the Majors Spring Kickoff where they will host Austin College and Missouri Baptist. The Majors play Austin College on Friday at 3:00pm.
