JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College men's tennis team was finally able to get their 2018 season underway on Tuesday afternoon, after several matches were postponed due to weather. The Majors took on cross-town rival Belhaven University. Millsaps dominated all afternoon long on their way to a 9-0 win.
In doubles play
Diego Marti-Vertiz and
Brandon Beck got things started with an 8-2 win. After
Cameron Doles and
Jacob Niehaus followed suit with an 8-2 win,
Alex Centurion and
Davis Plummer closed things out with an 8-5 win to give the Majors a 3-0 advantage.
At #2 singles, Plummer got things going with a 6-0, 6-0 win to put Millsaps up 4-0. Niehaus clinched the match for the Majors with his 6-1, 6-1 win at #6.
Centurion kept things going with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #3, and senior
Avinash Ananth got his 2018 campaign underway with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #5. Marti-Vertiz scored a 6-3, 6-2 win at #1, and
Josh Shearin came from behind to take #4 5-7, 6-2, 11-9.
Today marks the first win for Millsaps over Belhaven since April of 2010, and the first win over the Blazers under the direction of Head Coach
Jason Box.
Immediately after the victory, the Majors took on Tougaloo College. Millsaps scored their second win of the day, 5-0 in a match that was played to decision.
Cameron Doles started things off with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3, and
Jermon Drake followed it up with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5.
Jack Goodwin came through with an identical 6-0, 6-1 win at the #2 spot before
Owen Stovall came out on top 6-0, 6-0 at #4. Beck closed things out by picking up his second singles win of the day, 6-3, 7-5 at #1.
Next up, the Majors hit the road this weekend as they travel to Newport News, Virginia for a pair of matches. Millsaps will take on Methodist University at 4:00pm CST on Friday and Christopher Newport at 9:00am CST on Sunday.
