Softball Sweeps Opening Day of Spring Kickoff

JACKSON, Miss. – Softball came away with two victories Friday morning on the first day of the Millsaps Spring Kickoff. The Majors first defeated Missouri Baptist, 4-3 in extras in walk-off fashion and then turned around to run rule Austin College, 8-0 in five innings.

Game 1 v. Missouri Baptist:
Lindsey Osbon tripled in Jordan Lipari in the bottom of the 9th to give the Majors a hard fought 4-3 win over the Spartans in game one.

Kayla Davidson got the start for the Majors, she allowed one earned on five hits and struck out six batters over seven innings of work. Blair Little threw the final two innings and picked up the win, giving up two runs, one earned on one hit and struck out one batter.

Millsaps struck first in the bottom of the 1st when MK Bozeman worked a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position after stealing second base. Davidson followed that with an RBI single to make it 1-0 Majors after the first inning.

Missouri Baptist tied things up in the fifth with a two-out double, scoring a runner from second to even the game at one run apiece.

After neither side was able to put any runs on the board, the game went into extras and the Spartans quickly brought a run across with an RBI single. Millsaps answered right back in the home half when Kendall Carder hit a sac fly to bring in Mackenzie Johnson from third.

Missouri Baptist plated another run in the top of the ninth but Millsaps responded when Lipari drove in Little and then Osbon followed with a triple to bring in Lipari, giving the Majors their first win of the day.

Game 2 v. Austin College:
This time the bats came alive in game two as the Majors took down Austin College 8-0 in five innings. Cassidy DeNoon got the start in the circle and threw five shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out four batters.

With two outs in the 1st, Hailey Pearson smacked a single into left center to drive in two runs and moved Jordan Lipari to third. Moments later, Leslie Norris singled in Lipari to make it a three run inning for the Majors.

Millsaps scored one run in each of the next two innings. MK Bozeman singled in Kendall Carder from second in the second and Carder then doubled in Mackenzie Johnson in the third.

Two more came across in the 4th on RBI singles from Lindsey Osbon and Pearson. And the Majors finished the day when Carder drove in Johnson in the bottom of the fifth to put the run rule in place.

The remainder of the Millsaps Spring Kickoff has been canceled due to inclement weather in the Jackson area over the weekend. Millsaps will next be in action on Wednesday for a double-header against crosstown rival Belhaven beginning at 5:00pm.
