JACKSON, Miss. – In the season opener, the Millsaps softball team used two great pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep Louisiana College 7-1 and 9-1 at the Millsaps Softball Complex Friday afternoon. Millsaps begins its season 2-0, while LC drops to 0-2 in the early going.
Game 1:
Graduate student
Kayla Davidson picked up where she left off last season. She went the full seven innings, giving up just one earned on three hits while striking out nine batters.
Davidson surrendered her only run in the first inning, but quickly bounced back to strike out the final two batters of the inning. Millsaps got the run back in the home half of the first.
MK Bozeman led off with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. Davidson then helped herself out with an RBI double to tie the game at one.
Millsaps took the lead for good in the third.
Lindsey Osbon hit a two-out single and
Jordan Lipari followed with a double to bring her in, making it 2-1 Majors.
Kendall Carder used her speed to her advantage in the fourth. She earned a two-out single and advanced to second on the throw, she then stole third and scored the third run of the game for Millsaps on an error.
A big fifth inning put the game away for Millsaps. Osbon, Lipari and
Leslie Norris loaded the bases with one out. Then
Mackenzie Johnson brought in a run in and Carder finished it off by smacking a double to complete the five run inning and Millsaps hung on to take game one
Game 2:
This time Senior
Cassidy DeNoon got the start in the circle and kept her ERA perfect after one start. One unearned run came across against her and she gave up just three hits, striking out one.
Millsaps offense came through in the beginning of the game.
MK Bozeman,
Blair Little and
Kayla Davidson loaded the bases with no outs.
Lindsey Osbon came through with a two RBI double to put the Majors on top 2-0.
Three more crossed the plate in the second when
Kendall Carder brought in
Mackenzie Johnson with a single, and Little had an RBI groundout to later score Carder. Millsaps brought their lead up to 5-0 when
Kayla Davidson singled in Bozeman.
LC scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single that was unearned.
Jordan Lipari singled in Little and
Micah Danos hit a sac-fly to bring in another to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Majors took advantage of the run rule in the fifth. Little doubled in Johnson and Davidson drove in Carder to bring the score to 9-1 to end the game and complete the sweep.
Millsaps heads to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Huntingdon next for a double header on Saturday, February 10th starting at 12:00pm.
