JACKSON, Miss. – In the rematch of last year's Southern Athletic Association (SAA) title game, the defending champions and No. 8 team in the country Berry Vikings came out on top in both games Saturday morning 4-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two. Millsaps drops to 9-5 on the season and 2-3 in SAA play, while Berry advances to 18-3 and a perfect 5-0 in the conference.
Game 1:
Cassidy DeNoon got the start in the circle and went six innings, gave up four runs with just two of those earned and struck out three batters.
DeNoon kept the game scoreless, striking out her three batters over the first two innings and got out of a jam 4th inning jam when runners were on the corners with two outs.
All of Berry's runs came in the 5th inning, the Vikings got two runners on after a hit batter and a walk. Then a throwing error allowed the first run to come across, and the first hit of the inning was a two-RBI single to make it 3-0. After a groundout, the Vikings cleanup hitter hit an RBI double to make it 4-0.
In the home half of 5th,
Lindsey Osbon earned a two-out single but was unable to come across.
Kayla Davidson led the bottom of the 7th off with a double, but three quick outs ended the game.
Game 2:
Kayla Davidson started in the circle in game two and struck out eight batters over seven innings, including four in her first three innings of work.
Berry scored the first run of the game in the 4th on a play where Millsaps looked to have had an inning ending double play. But after a discussion it was ruled that there was an infield fly with the bases loaded and the runner on third scored to make it 1-0.
Three more runs came across for the Vikings in the 5th. With two runners on base, Kylie Aiken launched one over the left-center field fence to bring the Berry lead to 4-0.
After a quick 1-2-3 6th inning, two more scored for Berry in the top of the 7th. Once again it was Aiken who doubled home two runs to extend the Vikings leads to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Millsaps got on the board for the first time all day when
Jordan Lipari reached on an error and advanced to second. With one out,
Shauna Blady came into pinch hit and roped one into left-center to bring in Lipari and give the game its final score of 6-1.
Millsaps and Berry will finish the three-game series on Sunday at the Millsaps Softball Complex, game time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
