KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Millsaps College men's tennis team played a pair of matches in Florida on Tuesday. In the first match the Majors cruised to an 8-1 win over East Texas Baptist University. In the nightcap Millsaps fell to #22 Kenyon College by an identical 8-1 score.
In the first match Millsaps held the crucial 2-1 lead after doubles play. The team of
Brandon Beck and
Cooper Cearley took #1 by an 8-1 score, and
Owen Stovall /
Jack Goodwin took #2 8-3.
In singles play
Diego Marti-Vertiz took the #1 match by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Davis Plummer scored a win at #2 after his opponent retired in the second set.
Alex Centurion kept things going for the Majors at #3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Avinash Ananth picked up the 6-4, 6-4 win at #4.
Josh Shearin scored a come-from-behind win at #5, and
Jacob Niehaus completed the singles sweep for Millsaps by winning singles #6 6-4, 6-2.
In the match against Kenyon the Majors found themselves down 2-1 after doubles. Centurion and Plummer picked up the point with an 8-4 win at the #1 spot.
Unfortunately, Millsaps struggled in singles play. Both Marti-Vertiz and Plummer took their opponents to third sets, but Kenyon was able to close out each singles match for the 8-1 win.
What's Next?
Millsaps will have tomorrow off. The Majors conclude their Florida trip with an 11:00am CT match against Haverford on Thursday.
