MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing in their final non-conference games of the season, the Millsaps softball team swept Huntingdon 5-3 and 3-2 Tuesday night in Montgomery. The Majors improve to 14-8 overall, while the Hawks drop their season record to 11-13.
Game 1:
Cassidy DeNoon notched her fifth win of the season in the circle. She threw a complete game and allowed three runs, two earned on five hits and struck out three batters.
Kayla Davidson finished 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored, while
Jordan Lipari went 1-3 with an RBI and
Kendall Carder went 1-3 with two runs scored in the game.
Carder sparked the Majors in the 1st inning. With one out, Carder drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third with two outs and scored on a passed ball to give the Majors a 1-0 lead at the end of one.
Millsaps tacked on two more runs in the 5th inning.
MK Bozeman and Carder both reached base and executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. With both runners in scoring position, Davidson singled up the middle to drive in both runs and extend the Majors lead to 3-0.
Huntingdon brought three runs across to tie the game in the 6th inning. The first run scored on a throwing error and the second on a passed ball. The game-tying run came on an RBI single to make it a 3-3 ballgame after six innings.
Millsaps came through with two outs in the 7th scoring two runs to put the game away.
Leslie Norris worked a leadoff walk and two outs later, Davidson singled in Norris all the way from first to put the Majors on top. One more insurance run came in on when Lipari brought home Davidson with a base knock to secure the game one win.
Game 2:
Shauna Blady made her first career start in the circle against the Hawks in game two of the doubleheader. Blady went 3.2 innings, surrendered two earned runs on four hits and struck out three batters.
Kayla Davidson threw the final 3.1 innings, struck out five and did not allow a hit, picking up her seventh win of the year.
Jordan Lipari finished the game 2-3 with three RBI, while
MK Bozeman went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and
Leslie Norris and
Mackenzie Johnson also had multi-hit games.
For the second straight game, Millsaps scored in the 1st inning. Bozeman hit a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on a fly-out. With two gone, Lipari singled to right to bring in Bozeman and give the Majors the early lead.
It was Lipari again who brought home two more runs for the Majors in the 3rd. After Norris and
Bozeman
singled and advanced into scoring position, Lipari doubled down the right field line to bring in both runners and make it a 3-0 Millsaps lead.
A one out double and a two out single for Huntingdon brought them to within one run in the 4th. But Davidson was called into pitch and retired all ten of the batters she faced in order, completing the weekday sweep for the Majors.
Millsaps will now travel back to Jackson and resume SAA play on Saturday as they host Birmingham Southern for a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm at the Millsaps Softball Complex.
