JACKSON, Miss. – The #39 Millsaps College men's tennis team played their first SAA match on Sunday afternoon when they welcomed Birmingham Southern to the Coach Montgomery Tennis Courts.
In a match that had a delayed start due to a rain delay, the Majors held the all-important 2-1 advantage after doubles play, and capped off their win in singles to improve their record to 10-5 on the year. BSC falls to 6-6 overall.
Diego Marti-Vertiz and
Brandon Beck got things going with their strong 8-5 win at #2. BSC grabbed a tightly contested 8-6 match at #3, but Millsaps rebounded at #1.
Alex Centurion and
Davis Plummer handed Anthony Pellegrini and Jacob Weinacker their first loss of 2018 by a score of 9-7 to put Millsaps up 2-1. Centurion and Plummer were down 7-4 but ran off five straight points to grab the win.
The Majors completely dominated the singles matches to secure the win. Marti-Vertiz avenged a fall loss to Weinacker at #1 by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Plummer picked up an easy 6-0, 6-3 win at #2, and despite BSC scoring a point at #4, Centurion clinched the match at #3 with his 6-4. 6-3 win.
What's Next?
Millsaps hits the road for their next two matches. The Majors will be at Centre College on Friday and at Sewanne on Saturday.
