JACKSON, Miss. – It has already been a historic year on the tennis courts for Millsaps College. Earlier this season, for the first time in over thirty years, both the men's and women's programs found themselves ranked inside the 2017-2018 Oracle/ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The men reaching as high as #37 and the women as high as #28. Both teams are still currently regionally ranked #9 in the Atlantic South.
After both teams capped off the 2018 regular season by winning their final four matches in a row, the focus now shifts to the postseason and the Southern Athletic Association Tournament.
Men
The men's team enters the tournament as the number two seed, having only dropped one conference match this season, a 6-3 loss to #1 seed Sewanee back on March 31
st.
In the first round the Majors will face the #7 seed Centre College. In their previous meeting this season, Millsaps got the 5-4 win over the Colonels.
A big key to the Millsaps success has been the momentum created by grabbing an early lead in doubles play. A big reason why is the team of
Alex Centurion and
Davis Plummer are ranked tops in all of the Atlantic South Region.
In singles play, it has been well balanced up and down the lineup for the Majors this year as three different players,
Diego Marti-Vertiz, Centurion and
Avinash Ananth, have all earned a SAA Player of the Week award.
Women
The women's team also comes into the postseason as the #2 seed. Just like the men, their only SAA loss was to nationally ranked and #1 seeded Sewanee.
In the first round the Majors face #7 seed Rhodes College. Millsaps just swept Rhodes over the weekend by a 6-0 score on April 13
th.
Freshman
Grace Gaskins has quickly adapted to college tennis and has played a huge role this season for the Majors. She is currently the #13 ranked player in the Atlantic South Region and has a solid handle on the #1 singles spot for Millsaps.
In doubles play, the team of Gaskins and
Ashley Ford are ranked #10 in the region, and are a big reason why the Majors are typically able to gain the all-important 2-1 advantage early on in the match.
The 2018 SAA Tournament gets underway on Friday and will take place at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The women begin play at 10:00am with the men starting at 2:00pm.
