CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – On the brink of elimination, the No. 6 seeded Millsaps softball team survived another day on Friday. The Majors first took down No. 7 seeded Sewanee 6-1, then turned around to blow past No. 4 seeded Centre 10-4 to advance to the final four of the SAA softball tournament.
Game 1 v. Sewanee:
After Sewanee struck first with a solo homerun in the top of the 2nd, Millsaps came storming back scoring six unanswered runs to take the win. Senior
Cassidy DeNoon picked up the win in the circle in relief, striking out six batters over five shutout innings where she allowed only two hits.
Millsaps took the lead in the 3rd when
Kendall Carder was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.
Lindsey Osbon then doubled to right field and later scored on an error to give Millsaps the 2-1 lead.
A big four run inning 4th secured the victory for the Majors.
Blair Little got it started with double that one-hopped the left field fence and was brought in on another double by
Leslie Norris that went to right field.
MK Bozeman followed with an infield single, advancing Norris to third, after Bozeman stole second,
Kendall Carder tripled over the right fielders head to bring in both runners. Finally,
Hailey Pearson brought in Carder to complete the big inning.
DeNoon gave up just one hit for the rest of the game and threw a perfect 1-2-3 7th inning to advance the Majors to the next round.
Game 2 v. Centre:
This time Millsaps erased an early 4-2 deficit to take down the favored No. 4 seeded Centre Colonels. Again it was
Cassidy DeNoon who picked up the win in the circle in relief, the senior went 6.2 shutout innings striking out four batters.
Millsaps carried over the momentum from game one and scored the first two runs of the game in the 1st inning. With two outs and
Kendall Carder on second,
Hailey Pearson singled to right center to bring in Carder. Pearson would eventually advance to third and score on an error to make it 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 1st.
Centre had an answer bringing across four runs in the home half on a two-RBI single, and two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch to give the Colonels a 4-2 advantage after one complete.
The score stayed the same until the 5th, and Millsaps broke the game open knocking in six runs that all came with two outs. With the bases loaded,
Mackenzie Johnson drew a walk to score the first run and after a pitching change,
Cameron Trussell was hit by a pitch to tie the game at four. With the bases still juiced,
Blair Little drove a bases clearing double to the left center field gap and advanced to third on the throw. The sixth run of the inning came when an error allowed Little to score to make it 8-2 Majors.
Millsaps put the icing on the cake with two more in the 7th.
Jordan Lipari singled to score
Leslie Norris from third and
MK Bozeman scored on a wild pitch. When all was said and done, the Majors had scored eight unanswered runs and ran away with the 10-2 victory to advance in the tournament.
Millsaps takes on No. 5 seeded Rhodes College in another elimination game on Saturday at 11:00pm CT at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.
