MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –The Millsaps College men's tennis team took on Birmingham Southern in a SAA semifinal match on Saturday afternoon.
The Majors held the momentum and 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. The singles matches were tightly contested all coming down to the third court.
Alex Centurion was able to take the decisive third set 6-2 to give Millsaps a championship match berth.
With an 8-6 win from
Diego Marti-Vertiz and
Brandon Beck at #2, and an identical 8-6 win from
Jacob Niehaus and
Jack Goodwin at #3, the Majors took hold of the crucial 2-1 lead after doubles.
That lead really proved to the difference as the two teams split the singles matches three points apiece.
The Panthers scored wins at #1, #4 and #5. For the Majors
Davis Plummer took #2 6-2, 6-1 and
Josh Shearin grabbed a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at #6.
With the score tied at 4-4 the match came down to the #3 match. Centurion took the first set 7-6, but fell in set two by a 4-6 score. He was able to rebound in set three for a 6-2 win to clinch the spot in the championship for Millsaps.
What's Next?
With the win the Majors advance to tomorrow's championship match. Millsaps will take on the number one seed Sewanee in a match set to begin at 11:30am.
