MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On Saturday,the Millsaps College men's tennis team advanced to the Southern Athletic Association conference championship match with a thrilling 5-4 win over Rhodes. This afternoon the Majors took on the top seed, and #20 team in the country Sewanee.
Sewanee's lineup boasted a pair of regionally ranked doubles' combinations, and one regionally ranked individual player.
The Tigers were able to take the all-important 2-1 lead after doubles, and clinched the conference championship with three straight singles wins.
In doubles play the top ranked combination in the Atlantic South region,
Davis Plummer and
Alex Centurion knocked off their opponent by a score of 9-7 to give the Majors their only point of the match.
Avinash Ananth and
Brandon Beck both earned spots on the SAA All-Tournament team for Millsaps. Beck picked up a pair of wins this weekend at the #2 doubles spot with
Diego Marti-Vertiz. Ananth scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at #4 singles in the quarterfinal victory of Centre back on Friday.
Millsaps ends the season with an overall record of 17-7. They finished conference play with a 6-1 mark. Their only two SAA losses came at the hands of Sewanee with one of them being this afternoon's conference championship.
It was a historic year on courts for the Majors. Earlier this season, for the first time in over thirty years, the men's program found themselves ranked inside the 2017-2018 Oracle/ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings. They reached as high as #37. In the most recent poll they were the #9 team in the Atlantic South.
