JACKSON, Miss. – On Monday, the #40 Millsaps College men's tennis team took on the Vikings of Berry College in a match that had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather over the weekend.
The Majors held the critical 2-1 advantage after doubles play, and captured the first three singles matches to secure the 5-1 win in a match that was played to decision.
The win improves the Millsaps record to 13-6 overall on the year and 4-1 in the SAA. The Vikings fall to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Majors now are tied for second place in the SAA standings with Rhodes College. Both teams sit one match behind Sewanee.
Diego Marti-Vertiz and
Brandon Beck kicked the match off with an 8-6 win to get things going for Millsaps. Next up
Alex Centurion and
Davis Plummer defended their number one regional ranking with an 8-5 win at doubles #1. Berry grabbed a win at doubles #3 before the matched moved into singles play.
Because the match was played to decision, only three singles matches ended with final scores.
Marti-Vertiz picked up his second win of the day as he defeated Matthew Blakely 6-3, 6-2 at #1.
Josh Shearin grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win at #6, and
Jacob Niehaus clinched the match for the Majors with a 6-0, 6-4 win at #5.
What's Next?
Millsaps is right back at Coach Montgomery Courts for the final weekend of the regular season. On Saturday April 14
th they will host Rhodes, and they will entertain Hendrix in the regular season finale on Sunday.
