LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA-- Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, Millsaps' men's soccer team couldn't hold off Covenant College as the Scots netted three second half goals to hand the Majors a 1-3 loss.
Millsaps got the scoring started less than three minutes into the contest as
Luca Kistner took a pass from
Gabriel Ryce and put it past the Covenant goalkeeper from eight yards out. The Millsaps defense did the rest of the work in the first half as they held Covenant scoreless to take a halftime lead.
Seven minutes into the second half, a Millsaps penalty gave Jesse Riggs a penalty kick, which he put past Majors goalkeeper
Alfie Miller.
Neither team could get anything going offensively for the next 30 minutes until Carl Simakoff scored the game winner in the 83
rd minute. Riggs scored his second of the day in the waning minutes to send the Majors to 0-2 to start the season.
The Majors were led by Kistner with a goal and Ryce with an assist. Miller record 5 saves.
Words From the Coach:
"We came out and played really well early and we were able to get on the board in the first three minutes," head coach
Steve Voltz said. "Our guys were playing some of the best soccer we've played all season. An inexperienced play lead to a penalty kick for them and then they were able to take advantage of some mistakes. Our guys played hard and we look forward to opening up at home on Tuesday."
