Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Blanked by SUNY-Maritime

ATLANTA, Ga.—The Millsaps defense had a tall order in front of them on Friday against SUNY-Maritime.

The Privateers came into the match averaging more than 5 goals per contest, including outputs of 14 and 9 earlier in the season. And while the Majors stood their ground in the first half, not allowing a goal through the first 45 minutes, Maritime broke through with a header and two breakaway goals in the second half en route to a 3-0 win over Millsaps at Emory University.

In the first half, it seemed like the Majors defense had Maritime's number, limiting the Privateers to just 4 shots, none of which were on goal. The Majors offense had chances of their own, putting together 5 shots, with one on goal by Brett Judd, but couldn't capitalize.

The second half was a different story as it took the Privateers less than 3 minutes to pull ahead from a header off a corner kick. Then, with just over 10 minutes left in the match, Maritime's Chris Tavernese scored on a breakaway to give the Privateers a big insurance goal and a 2-0 lead. The final goal for Maritime came in the 84thminute off another breakaway.

The Majors were led by Judd with 3 shots on goal, followed by Gabriel Ryce and Christopher Bruni with one each. James Kelly, who was inserted at goalkeeper after starter Tyler Andrews received a red card, had 4 saves in his goaltending debut.

What the Coach Said

"We just made inexperienced mistakes," head coach Steve Voltz said. "And we just couldn't capitalize in front of the goal. As we get into conference play, we need to grow up in a hurry. We continue to give ourselves chances, but eventually, we have to take advantage of them. We have the talent."

What's Next?

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Millsaps as they continue their Atlanta trip with a 4pm match on Saturday against Emory University. The Eagles are coming off a 2017 season that saw them make a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight and they are currently ranked 5thin the nation.
