ATLANTA, Ga.—For the first 45 minutes of Saturday's game against Emory, it looked like there could be an upset brewing. The Majors trailed the 5
thranked Eagles just 1-0 heading into the half.
But 2 second half goals, coupled with the fact that Millsaps only had 2 shots on goal for the match, spoiled any type of upset the Majors had in mind as the Eagles down Millsaps 3-0.
With starting goalkeeper
Alfie Miller tending an injured knee and backup goalkeeper
Tyler Andrews forced to sit out this match because of a red card in yesterday's loss to Maritime,
James Kelly, who is normally a forward, was tasked with stopping the potent Emory offense. He kept the Eagles off the board for the first 40 minutes, making 4 saves in the process. But in the 41
stminute, Moustafa Khattab took a pass from Victor Garcia and put it past Kelly, giving Emory a 1-0 lead.
Less than 6 minutes into the second half, Emory added an insurance goal when Josh Berman headed in a corner kick from Khattab, giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. They added goals in the 64
th and 86
thminute to put the match on ice.
Emory outshot the Majors 25-5. Offensively, the Majors were led by
Jeff Bruni and
Mikel Gomez Ramos, who each had a shot on goal. Kelly finished with 7 saves.
What the Coach Said
"Our guys came out and played hard tonight," said head coach
Steve Voltz. "That goal right before the half really hurt us and then Emory was just too much at the end. But we played a lot of young guys who competed and got some good experience."
