JACKSON, Miss. – Sitting at 2-0, the Millsaps College football team is off to their best start since 2013. This weekend the Majors take their show on the road as they travel to San Antonio, Texas for the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener against Trinity University. The Tigers come into the weekend 1-1 this year and are receiving votes in the most recent edition of the D3Football.com Top 25 Poll.
Last Week
The Majors marched up and down the field all afternoon on their way to a 35-0 win over the Westminster College Blue Jays. The offense racked up over 600 total yards and the defense pitched a shutout in the victory.
Quinton Oliver paced the Millsaps offense on the ground with 130 yards and one touchdown. Senior
Andrew Warren added a pair of rushing touchdowns and 82 yards. On the defensive side of the ball
Chandler Coleman led all tacklers with 10. Senior defensive back
Malcolm Ben totaled 8 tackles, 3 of those for loss, and forced one fumble. That performance earned him a spot on the D3Football.com National Team of the Week, a first for Millsaps since 2014.
This Week: Saturday, September 15th 1:00pm at Trinity University (1-1).
The Tigers enter this weekend's matchup 1-1 on the year. In Week 1 Trinity blew out McMurry 44-0. Last week they fell to No. 8 Hardin-Simmons by a final score of 42-33.
The Majors' defense, which has allowed just three points all season, faces a tough test Saturday as the Trinity offense sits atop the SAA in points per game averaging 38.5 per contest. The Tigers rank just behind the Majors in rushing yards per game with 195. Millsaps leads the conference at 207.5.
Sophomore signal caller Wyatt Messex has completed exactly 50% of his passes for 357 yards and 5 touchdowns this year. He has thrown just one interception. Four different players have scored a rushing touchdown for Trinity. Senior Evan McDowell leads the way in yardage with 154. Sophomore Chris Stewart and junior Tommy Lavine are the only Tigers with more than five receptions so far. Stewart has more than doubled his teammates with 207 yards, but junior Matthew Thompson leads the team with a pair of receiving touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball Trinity is led by the reigning SAA Defensive Player of the Week Keivan Bourdreaux-Bostic. Last week he posted a conference-high 13 tackles and also forced one fumble. The Tigers have yet to intercept a pass this year but have recovered three opponent's fumbles.
Last season the Tigers snuck out of Harper Davis Field with a 28-26 win. It was a back and forth contest all afternoon long, and the Majors had a look at a game winning field goal. Unfortunately
Andrew Byrd's attempt from 49 yards out missed wide left which allowed Trinity to escape with the victory. The last Millsaps win against the Tigers came in week two of 2016 when the Majors knocked off the Tigers 24-20.
