SAN ANTONIO, Texas– On Saturday, the Millsaps College football team traveled to Texas to open Southern Athletic Association play against the Tigers of Trinity University.
To say that it was less than ideal playing conditions would have been an understatement. Scoring came at a premium with field position becoming the priority.
Late in the 4
th quarter
Reid Evans forced a fumble that was recovered by
Malcolm Ben. The turnover gave the Majors the ball in Tiger territory with less than three minutes to play. The ensuing drive ended with
Hunter Sellen sending a 25-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to give Millsaps the 10-7 win.
How It Happened
Trinity won the toss and after electing to receive the opening kickoff, scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game with a 49-yard pass. That would prove to be the only Tiger points of the afternoon.
The field was soaked prior to kickoff, and the on-and-off rain all afternoon did nothing to help the playing conditions in a game that saw a combined 13 punts between the two teams.
Midway through the second quarter the Tigers muffed the snap on a punt attempt.
Mickale Massey brought the Trinity punter down for a 12-yard loss to give the Majors' offense the ball deep inside Trinity territory on the turnover on downs.
It took Millsaps just two plays to punch it in for six points. The Tigers committed a pass interference penalty on 1
st and 10 which gave the Majors the ball on the 2-yard line. On the very next play,
Fritz Walker III scored his first rushing touchdown of the season. After Sellen was true on his PAT try the game was tied 7-7.
The scoreboard would stay that way for the remainder of the 2
nd quarter as the teams went to halftime tied up.
As the second half kicked off, the rain intensified and it really moved into a battle for field position with a feeling that the first team to score would come away with the win.
Late in the 4
th quarter Trinity took over after intercepting a Millsaps pass. The Tigers began with the ball on their own 36-yard line. After an incomplete pass and a 6-yard rush, Trinity faced 3
rd down and 4. On the handoff Evans came up from his linebacker position for the tackle and forced the fumble, Ben was right there to cover it and give the Majors the ball back deep inside Tiger territory.
Using a combination of
Quinton Oliver and
Andrew Warren, Millsaps kept the ball on the ground for seven plays. They picked up 28 yards to bring up 4
th and goal with just 4 seconds remaining. The field goal unit trotted on. The snap from
Cade Broussard and hold from
Ty Durham were both perfect, and Sellen's 25-yard field goal was good to give the Majors the 10-7 win.
Millsaps is 3-0 to start the year for the first time since the 2013 season.
Offensively the Majors picked up 123 of their 242 total yards on the ground. Oliver led the way with 83 yards on 17 attempts. Walker had the lone touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Chandler Coleman led the team with 11 tackles and 1 sack.
Hooch Jeansonne,
Steele Liles and
Dylan Higgins all had eight tackles each for Millsaps, and
Liam Vincifora added another sack for the Majors. Evans and Ben combined for the only turnover of the afternoon.
