SEWANEE, Tenn.– The Millsaps College football team traveled to Tennessee on Saturday for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup with the Tigers of Sewanee.
The Majors led 14-0 at halftime, and held off a furious Sewanee comeback attempt to pick up the 21-14 win, and improve their record to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the SAA.
How It Happened
After both teams exchanged punts on their opening possessions, the Majors offense took over on their own 26-yard line.
Chance Clowers led Millsaps on a 14-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 6:44 for the first score of the game. It was capped off by a 15-yard pass from Clowers to
Ty Durham for the score. On the drive Clowers completed passes to four different recievers, including the 15-yard strike to Durham for the touchdown.
The Majors' defense forced a Tiger three-and-out, and after a good Sewanee punt, the Millsaps offense was forced to start from their own 5-yard line. This time it took the Majors 11 plays to go 95 yards for the score. Sophomore RB
Tyler Muse found the endzone from one yard out,
Hunter Sellen was good on the PAT attempt, and with 14:12 left to the play in the 2nd quarter Millsaps found themselves with a 14-0 lead.
Later on in the second quarter Millsaps was driving deep inside Sewanee territory, but unfortunately a missed field goal ended the half.
Midway through the 3rd quarter the Tigers got on the scoreboard thanks to a 37-yard touchdown pass.
The Majors had the answer however. It was another long drive that took 15 plays and covered 82 yards in 8:13 for their third touchdown of the game.
Quinton Oliver who scored from 1-yard out, his team-leading fourth of the season, and after the PAT Millsaps led 21-7.
After the defense forced a punt, it looked like the offense would be getting the ball back with a chance to put the game away. Unfortunately a fumble on the return gave the Sewanee the ball back in Millsaps territory. 12 plays later the Tigers were in the endzone again, this time using a 10-yard pass, to cut the lead to 21-14.
The teams traded punts, and with just 33 seconds left in the game,
Andrew Byrd launched a 50 yarder, that forced the Tigers to try to go 80 yards with no timeouts for the game-tying score. Sewanee did get the ball out to midfield, and had a look at the end zone on the game's final play. The Millsaps defense stood tall however, as the 'hail mary' attempt fell to turf, and the Majors picked up the 21-14 win.
Clowers finished the game 30-40 for 242 yards through the air and the one TD pass.
JD Cook hauled in a team-high 11 receptions for 74 yards and Durham ended with five catches for 72 yards and the one score.
Andrew Warren was the game's leading rusher with 104 yards on 16 carries, but it was Oliver and Muse who found the endzone on the ground.
Defensively,
Christian Roberts led the team with 8 tackles.
Nick Gradnigo added 6 and forced a fumble that was recovered by
Hooch Jeansonne.
Chandler Coleman had two tackles for loss from his linebacker position.
Sellen was 3-3 on PAT attempts, and Byrd finished the game with a punt average of 47.3, including a long of 54 and two downed inside the 20-yard line.
