JACKSON, Miss. – Coming into the week at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Athletic Association, the Millsaps College football team is off to their best start since 2013. This weekend the Majors are on the road for the second consecutive time as they travel to Tennessee for a SAA game against Sewanee. The Tigers come into the weekend 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAA this year. Last week Sewanee picked up a 28-20 win over Austin College.
Last Week
To say that it was less than ideal playing conditions last week against Trinity would have been an understatement. Scoring came at a premium with field position becoming the priority.
Late in the 4th quarter
Reid Evans forced a fumble that was recovered by
Malcolm Ben. The turnover gave the Majors the ball in Tiger territory with less than three minutes to play. The ensuing drive ended with
Hunter Sellen sending a 25-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to give Millsaps the 10-7 win.
Sellen picked up the SAA Special Teams Player of the Week award for his game-winner.
This Week: Saturday, September 22nd 1:00pm at Sewanee (2-1, 1-0).
The Tigers enter this weekend's matchup 2-1 on the year. Sewanee began the season with a huge 43-10 win over Kenyon. After a week two loss to Washington and Lee, the Tigers opened up conference play last week with a 28-20 win over Austin College.
The Majors' defense, which is only giving up 183.7 yards per game and has allowed just 10 total points in their first three games, faces another tough test this week in Sewanee QB Alex Darras. He ranks second in the SAA in yards per game (263) and third in passing touchdowns (6).
Junior RB Warren Holland is the leading rusher for the Tigers. He has 154 yards on 32 attempts and 1 touchdown. Freshman Malik Santiago has one TD as well, and has racked up 150 yards on 30 attempts this year. In the receiving category, three players: Allan Puri, Micah Maes and Cyrus McCullough have all reached the 100 yard plateau already. Maes leads the team with 3 TDs.
On the defensive side of the ball Sewanee is led by senior DB Thomas Richardson who has totaled a team-high 18 tackles and also has 2 interceptions. Jo Jo Matlock leads the way with 2 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks this year.
In last year's matchup the Majors came back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to capture a 17-13 win. Millsaps leads the all-time series 43-25-3 with their last loss to Sewanee coming in 2005.
