JACKSON, Miss. -- After back-to-back weeks on the road, the Millsaps College football team returned to Harper Davis Field on Saturday night for a primetime Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup with Rhodes College.
The teams went to the locker room tied at 7-7, and the Lynx hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired to escape Jackson with a 24-21 win.
How It Happened
Rhodes struck first on a 23-yard rushing TD to take a 7-0 lead late in the 1st quarter.
On the ensuing drive,
Fritz Walker III took a 3rd down handoff, and ripped off a 56-yard run for the first Millsaps touchdown of the game. The PAT try from
Hunter Sellen was good, and with 3:21 left in the 1st quarter the game was tied 7-7.
Rhodes was able to move the ball in the 2nd quarter, but each time they had a scoring chance the Majors' defense held strong. A pair of missed field goals and a
Christian Roberts interception kept the Lynx off the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the Millsaps offense did not fare much better and the game remained tied 7-7 at halftime.
Late in the 3rd quarter, after a poor Rhodes punt, the Majors' offense took over on the Lynx 45-yard line. Just five players later,
Chance Clowers found
Ty Durham in the back of the endzone for a 7-yard touchdown pass. Sellen was again good on the PAT attempt, and with just 8 seconds left in the 3rd quarter Millsaps led 14-7.
In their next drive, Rhodes answered back with a touchdown run on 4th and goal to tie things up at 14-14. After a Major three-and-out, the Lynx scored again with just 4:08 left on the clock to take a 21-14 lead.
When Millsaps got the ball back, Clowers led the team down the field, using 8 plays to go 65 yards for the score. The drive was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run from Walker, and Sellen's PAT tied the game at 21-21 with less than two minutes left on the game.
On the final drive of the game Rhodes moved the ball 69 yards in 1:41 to set up a 33-yard field goal attempt. Crew Jacobs' kick snuck just inside the right upright to give the Lynx the 24-21 win.
Clowers finished 16-26 for 153 yards and 1 TD through the air. Walker led the rushing attack with 70 yards on 8 attempts and 2 touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball
Chandler Coleman had a monster game that included 9 total tackles, 4 tackles-for-loss and 1 sack. Roberts,
Nick Gradnigo and
Gary Roberts all had interceptions for the Majors, and
Hooch Jeansonne added another 8 tackles, 2 tackles-for-loss and sack.
Career Milestone
By hauling in 3 receptions for 26 yards and the 1 touchdown, Durham has now surpassed the 1,000 yard receiving threshold for his Millsaps College career.
