JACKSON, Miss.—The Majors men's soccer team came into Saturday's match against Hendrix with a monkey on their back. Actually, it was a huge gorilla. The Majors hadn't scored a goal in 3 matches, despite multiple opportunities. But thanks to
Jeff Bruni and
Brett Judd, the Majors were able to shake that gorilla off in their 2-1 overtime win against Hendrix.
Bruni got the scoring started early for Millsaps as he beat multiple Warrior defenders in the 30
thminute and put it past the diving goalkeeper for his 4
thof the season.
Less than 30 seconds later, however, Hendrix's Ricky Barrientos scored his own unassisted goal, finding a hole in the Majors defense and putting it past goalkeeper
Tyler Andrews. That would be Andrews' only slip up of the match as he was on lockdown for the rest of the match.
Neither team was able to find the next in the second half, with both defenses clamping down and sending the match into overtime.
In overtime,
Jeff Owens sent a fantastic pass to Judd, who put it drilled his shot past the goalie to give Millsaps the win just 50 seconds into the extra period.
Millsaps outshot Hendrix 23-8, with the Warriors having just 2 shots on goal to the Majors 9.
What the Coach Said
"I'm really pleased when our guys get a win, especially an emotional win in overtime," head coach
Steve Voltz said. "We put ourselves in a bad position early on, after we scored, and let Hendrix back in the game. But to Hendrix's credit, they really battled and made it tough on us. The things continues to be that we need to get guys to win the moment when they're in front of the goal; if we do that, we'll be fine. But just really happy to pick up the win on Family Weekend. Now we're right back in the mix of it in the SAA. We've got a tough slate of games next weekend, starting with Oglethorpe on Friday."
What's Next?
The Majors have a week before finishing their 2018 home slate with a pair of games next weekend. They'll face Oglethorpe on Friday at 7:30 pm before celebrating the seniors against Berry on Sunday at 2:30.
