CONWAY, Ark.—Some wins you have one or two big scorers who account for most of the team's points. Other games, it's a group effort.
Friday's game against Hendrix definitely fell into the latter category, as only one player,
Braxton Thomas, scored in double figures. But that didn't stop the Majors, who moved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAA with a 60-46 win over Hendrix in Millsaps' first SAA road game.
How It Happened
Defense was the name of the game for Millsaps in the first half. Hendrix took an early 3-0 lead 45 seconds into the game. They would be kept off the board for the rest of the quarter as they went 0-18 from the field. Millsaps got on the board with a
Dia Fortenberry jumper followed by an
Anna Thigpen layup that would give them the lead, which they wouldn't relinquish. The Majors, whose offense was also a bit rusty to start, led only 9-3 at the end of one.
Millsaps built onto their lead to start the second quarter, using an
Anna Wilson layup and a pair of
Millicent Butler freethrows to extend their lead to 10. The Majors then turned on the gas, outscoring the Warriors 21-9 for the quarter, to take a 30-11 lead into the half.
The third quarter was much of the same for the two teams, as Millsaps was able to build their lead to 25, 49-24, to start the final period.
Hendrix put together a big fourth quarter, outscoring Millsaps 22-11, but the Majors had built up too much of a lead for the game to be in jeopardy. The Warriors were able to pull within 12, but clutch freethrow shooting followed by a Fortenberry three and a Wilson layup iced the game.
The Majors were led by Thomas's 10 points while Butler, Fortenberry and Wilson each had nine.
Rebecca Harris chipped in eight while Thigpen had a big night on the glass, pulling down a season-high 11 rebounds.
Stats of the Game
-The Millsaps bench outscored Hendrix's bench 20-9.
-Defensively, the Majors held Hendrix to just 22.2% shooting from the field, including just 10.5% in the first half.
-The three points Millsaps gave up in the first quarter is their lowest points against total for the season.
