JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team hits the road this weekend for their second Southern Athletic Association (SAA) trip of the season.
The Majors have a quick turnaround as they will face rematches with last week's opponents, Centre College and Sewanee.
Check out the game notes below for all of the details on this week's matchups.
Last Week
Millsaps faced these same two opponents at home last week. On Friday night the first place Colonels jumped out to a 14 point lead at halftime. The Majors opened up the second half and got it down to 12, but Centre responded with a quick 7-0 run and never let their lead slip below 15 the rest of the way en route to an 84-55 win.
Sunday afternoon it was Millsaps that led Sewanee 36-34 lead at halftime, but the Tigers pulled ahead with less than 4 minutes left, and were able to escape Jackson with the 68-67 win.
Millsaps now sits at 10-8 overall and 2-5 in SAA play.
Tomorrow: 7:00pm CT vs Centre College (15-3, 6-1 SAA)
The Majors kick off the weekend by taking on the first-place team in the SAA. Centre currently holds an one-game lead over Berry in the league standings.
After a big week offensively, and earning SAA Player of the Week honors, the Colonels are now led in scoring by junior Perry Ayers. He averages 12.8 points per game, but poured in a game-high 30 points in last week's matchup.
If the Majors' defense, which continues to lead the league in opponent's field goal percentage, is able to hold Centre to under their season-average shooting the ball, as well as limit Ayers, Millsaps will be in good position to pull out the win Friday night.
Sunday: 3:00pm vs Sewanee (14-4, 3-4 SAA)
Millsaps will close out the weekend with a game against the Tigers of Sewanee. The Tigers will host Birmingham-Southern on Friday night before welcoming the Majors to town Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers are paced by sophomore guard Luke Smith, who continues to lead the SAA in scoring with 20.3 points per game. In last week's matchup the Majors held Smith to just 13 points on 3-9 shooting from the field, but his teammate Cam Caldwell picked up the slack with 27 points in the win.
Millsaps led by as many as 9 points last week, but the Tigers got hot from beyond the arc down the stretch. If the Majors are able to replicate what they did in the early portion of Sunday's game they will no doubt have a chance to pull out a road SAA win this weekend.
