JACKSON, Miss.—Albeit it was only the Majors third game of their SAA slate, but Sunday's matchup with Oglethorpe was a big one.
Both teams were 11-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference and vying to be the team to beat. Oglethorpe also came in having won last season's SAA tournament, knocking Millsaps out in the first round. But when the dust settled, it was the Majors, behind a huge game from
Dia Fortenberry, that grabbed control of the conference with a 66-57 win over the visiting Stormy Petrels.
How It Happened
Oglethorpe jumped out to an early 8-2 lead before
Millicent Butler knocked down a three to put the Majors back in the mix. After OU pulled ahead by six again, five straight Millsaps freethrows brought the Majors within one. Oglethorpe hit a jumper at the end of the quarter to lead 13-10 after one.
Millsaps started the second quarter on a 5-0 run with
Braxton Thomas hitting a pair of freethrows and
Morgan McCrea knocking down a three. The two teams traded baskets but with the score tied at 20, Fortenberry came up with a big steal and a fastbreak layup to give Millsaps a two-point lead, which they would not relinquish. A Butler three and an
Anna Wilson bucket sandwiched an OU basket, building the Majors lead to five. OU was able to pull within three, but a Fortenberry layup gave Millsaps a 31-26 halftime lead.
In the third, after a Stormy Petrel three brought Millsaps' lead back to four, Fortenberry came up with a big steal, basket and-one, followed by a Wilson three, to put the lead in double digits.
OU was able to pull within six to start the fourth quarter, but an
Amber Newell basket, along with a Thomas layup and-one took the lead back to 11. Millsaps was able to ice the game down the stretch by going 8-11 from the charity stripe.
The Majors were led by Fortenberry's season-high 29 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals. Butler scored in double-digits for the third straight game, chipping in 11.
Anna Thigpen had a big game down low, adding five blocked shots to go with her seven rebounds.
Stats of the Game
- The Millsaps bench outscored OU's bench 16-6.
-The Majors defense and speed played a big factor in the win, as they outscored OU 22-12 in fastbreak points.
