JACKSON, Miss. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Millsaps College women's basketball team played the home opener of their 2019-20 season. The Majors welcomed the Eagles of the University of the Ozarks to the Hangar Dome.
Millsaps led comfortably at halftime, but a late Eagle comeback sent the game into overtime. In the extra period Ozarks shot nearly 60% from the field to sneak away with the 81-74 win.
The loss drops the Majors to to 3-2 overall while the Eagles improve to 1-3.
How It Happened
Millsaps dominated in the opening quarter outscoring Ozarks 18-6. The Majors were extremely active on the defensive end of floor scoring seven of their points off of Eagle turnovers, and holding Ozarks to just one made field goal.
The second ten minute period was much more even matched, but Millsaps was still able to edge out the Eagles by a point to carry a 37-24 lead to the halftime locker room.
Momentum began to shift in the third quarter as the Majors struggled on the offensive end scoring just five points in the first six minutes of play. All told, Ozarks was able to cut the Millsaps lead to 49-46 heading into the final period.
It was back and forth during the final ten minutes of regulation, as despite shooting 50% from the field Millsaps was unable to put the Eagles away. Ozarks made a three-pointer inside the last thirty seconds of play to tie the game at 64-64 and force overtime.
The Eagles offense kept things rolling in the extra period, shooting better than 57% from the field, including 2-2 from beyond the three-point arc to pull out an 81-74 win.
