JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College football team was at home on Saturday afternoon for the final time in 2019. The Majors welcomed the Hendrix College Warriors to Harper Daivs Field for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup.
The Majors led 7-6 at the close of the first quarter, but it was Hendrix who held a 13-7 lead at halftime.
Despite Millsaps getting on the board first in the second half, the Warriors were able to outscore the Majors 20-15 over the final 30 minutes to come away with the 33-22 win.
The loss drops Millsaps to 5-4 overall. They are 3-4 in the SAA. Hendrix improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
How It Happened
The Majors started wiith the ball, but a three-and-out quickly forced them into punt formation. The Warriors were able to get pressure on the kick and blocked the punt, one of three blocked punts by Hendrix on the afternoon, to set them up with good field position.
One play later the Warriors were in the endzone for the game's first touchdown. After a missed extra point, Hendrix led 6-0 with 12:54 left to play in the opening quarter.
After both teams exchanged punts over the next two drives, the Majors took over on their own 24-yard line.
Millsaps was able to march 76 yards in just nine plays for a score. The drive was capped off by a 4-yard pass from
Amryn Jeffrey to
Austin Russell for the touchdown.
Hunter Sellen's PAT gave Millsaps their first lead of the afternoon with 5:03 remaining in the 1st quarter.
The game was back-and-forth for the rest of the half, but unfortunately the Warriors were able to find the endzone late in the 2nd quarter to take a 13-7 lead to the halftime break.
The Millasps defense forced a missed field goal to open up the second-half allowing the offense to take over on their own 29-yard line.
The ensuing drive saw the Majors pick up 54 yards. The drive stalled, but Sellen was able to convert on a 34-yard field goal attempt to make it a 13-10 game with 6:04 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Warriors answered back with consecutive touchdowns to move ahead 26-10 early in the 4th quarter.
Millsaps responded with a 47-yard touchdown from Jeffrey to
Moise Tezzo, but a failed two-point conversion attempt kept it at a two score game.
The defense did their part on the next Hendrix drive when back-to-back sacks from
Trey Butler and
Mickale Massey forced a Warrior punt.
Unfortunately the Majors threw an interception on their drive and the Warriors returned the pass deep into Millsaps territory. Hendrix needed just one play to score a touchdown and move ahead 33-20.
Millsaps continued to battle, scoring another touchdown, this time a 15-yard connection from Jeffrey to Russell, but the Majors comeback ran out of time as Hendrix held on for the 33-22 win.
Notables
Offensively, Tezzo led the way with 99 receiving yards and one touchdown. Russell found the endzone twice, his third mutli-score game of the season, and added 71 yards on a team-high six receptions.
On the defensive side of the ball, Massey was all over the field to finish with a game-high 16 tackles. He also had two sacks. Senior
Reid Evans finished with double-digit tackles for the fifth time in 2019. Meanwhile
Liam Vincifora tied a season-high with three sacks.
