JACKSON, Miss. -- On Sunday, the Millsaps College women's basketball team wrapped up their second invitational tournament by hosting the Wildcats of Louisiana College.
The result was never in doubt as the Majors scored the game's first points and never gave up the lead.
In the end a defensive effort that held the Wildcats to just 22.1% from the field, combined with a an offense that made over 50% of their attempts allowed Millsaps to cruise to a 71-47 win.
The victory pushes the Majors to 5-3 overall this year while Louisiana College falls to 1-3.
How It Happened
The Millsaps defense was active from the opening tip as they held the Wildcats scoreless for nearly five minutes at the start of the first quarter.
When LC finally scored their first basket, the Majors were already ahead 7-2. The teams traded baskets for the final five minutes of the quarter, and Millsaps led 14-10 when the buzzer sounded.
The Wildcats cut it to a one point game after opening the second quarter with a three-pointer, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the afternoon.
The Majors led by as many as 12 points, but settled for a 27-21 lead at halftime.
The third quarter is when the momentum really shifted squarely to the side of the Majors. Helped in part by consecutive three-pointers from
Anna Wilson, Millsaps grew their lead to 43-29.
The Majors were able to empty the bench in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as they finished off the 71-47 win.
Notables
Wilson led Millsaps with a season-high 19 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and had a block.
Dia Fortenberry continued her strong start to the season posting 15 points, while
Taelor Manning rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Majors with 12.
Megan Donaldson was the team's leading rebounder with 7, and freshman
Devan Caldwell dished out a team-high 5 assists.
What's Next?
Millsaps continues this homestand by hosting Belhaven University on Tuesday. The rematch between the two schools is set for 6:00 p.m.
