JACKSON, Miss. -- On Tuesday, the Millsaps College women's basketball team continued a long stretch of home games by hosting cross-town rival Belhaven University.
The Blazers jumped out to a ten point lead early on, and survived an outstanding third quarter from the Majors to score an 83-66 win.
The loss drops Millsaps to 5-4 overall this year while Belhaven improves to 6-1.
How It Happened
The Belhaven offense got off to a quick start, particularly from beyond the three-point line where they made five of their first ten attempts to help grab a 26-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Blazers stretch their lead out to 42-29 as the teams headed to halftime.
The Majors regrouped and responded in a big way in the third quarter. On the defensive end they limited Belhaven to just three made field goal attempts and 11 total points.
On the offensive end, a late run highlighted by five straight points from
Dia Fortenberry helped to tie the game at 50-50 with less than 30 seconds left in the quarter.
Unfortunately Belhaven closed out the period with a three-pointer, and outscored the Majors 30-16 in the final quarter to secure the win.
