Women's Basketball Unable to Overcome Early Deficit in Loss to ETBU

JACKSON, Miss. -- On Tuesday afternoon, the Millsaps College women's basketball team took a break from studying for their final exams to play a non-conference game against the Tigers of East Texas Baptist University.

ETBU jumped out to a big lead early on, and despite the teams trading baskets for the final three quarters, the Majors were unable to make the comeback in a 75-59 loss.

Millsaps falls to 5-5 overall while the Tigers improve to 4-3.

How It Happened
The Tigers came out of the gate strong scoring the game's first 12 points.

Dia Fortenberry got the Majors on the board first at the 5:08 mark of the 1st quarter with a jumper.

ETBU outscored Millsaps 10-7 over the next five minutes to grab a 22-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

The teams opened up the second period by trading three-point baskets, but the Majors quickly had the lead cut to single digits a few possessions later on a Fortenberry layup.

The Tigers responded, and led by as many as 16 points in the quarter, but Megan Donaldson beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to make it 41-27 at halftime.

ETBU opened up the 3rd quarter on a 7-0 run, but that was ended with a triple from Devan Caldwell.

The lead was stretched out to as many as 21 points in the quarter, but the Majors closed strong with the last five points, including a three-point play from Mikenzi Laster to make it 59-43 heading into the final period.

Millsaps got to within 12 points late in the game on a pair of free throws from Elecia Lartigue, but unfortunately the comeback fell short as the Tigers held on for the 75-59 win.

Notables
Fortenberry led the Majors with 23 points, she also pulled down 11 rebounds to complete her second double-double of the season. Taelor Manning added 11 points to finish in double-digits for third consecutive game. She also had a team-high 4 assists.

On the defensive end of the floor Lartigue led the way with 3 steals.
